Javascript in Wordpress Posts
April 05, 2008
I've been busy these past few days working on changing over my eBay links to the new ones from the eBay Partnership Network. One of the options in the Link Generator section that looked interesting was the Geotargeting one.
With Geotargeting, your visitors will get directed to the eBay program in their country (for a number of specific countries); you also set a default eBay program for those from countries not covered specifically by an eBay program.
The link you must use, however, is a Javascript link; this was problematic for me because the sites where I'm running eBay links use Wordpress. Up until now, when I needed to use Javascript inside a post, I just "repurposed" the Adsense Deluxe plugin, but with these eBay links, it would be far more efficient if I could just insert the Javascript directly into each post.
I did some searching and finally found a plugin that lets you use Javascript directly in your posts. The plugin is called Scriptenabler - this link directly downloads the plugin's zip file (there is no page on plugin page for this plugin on the author's site). Thanks very much to Life After Coffee for posting about the plugin, and of course to Otto, the developer of the plugin.
The plugin works beautifully, and I've already changed over about a third of my links on one site to the new EPN Geotargeting links. There are over a 1000 pages on this particular site, so I've still got a ways to go, but it's been nice to see all my clickthroughs tracking. With the Geotargeting links I also see my impressions as well. No sales or registrations so far but it's still early in the game!

Well you just saved me the time of searching for a plugin because I was thinking the same thing about inserting them directly into posts! :) Thanks for sharing the tip.

Glad you found it useful, Loretta! Someone was telling me that Wordpress 2.5 actually takes care of the javascript-in-posts problem, but as always, I'm waiting a bit until the bugs get ironed out (and plugins get updated!) before upgrading :)
