Trying Out Press Releases

November 18, 2007

If I have learned one thing this year, it's that spending money on my online business, while risky, is a risk that I simply have to take if I want to take things to the next level.

When I made the decision earlier this summer to outsource most of the blogging to my affiliate blogs, it was not such an easy decision. I most certainly didn't feel I was making enough money to justify spending so much of it on outsourcing.

But the results are pretty clear. It's working.

And on a personal level, I've been feeling renewed. Which means I now have the energy to focus on things like promoting my sites.

This week, I'm going to give press releases a try. I don't have a clue how to write a press release, and I've been busy on another online project (building a VRE empire - I'll post more about that later), so I've hired a professional writer to write and distribute the release for me.

I don't know what results I'll see, but if it works out, I have another site that I'm going to give this a try with. The timing is right, because people are very definitely shopping online for the holidays.

I'll keep you all posted on my results.

Hey BJ. Writing press releases is easy once you know the format. Here is a Press Release template and formatting tips.

Hey,

What approach did you take when outsourcing your blog? Did you find someone locally? Did you use an online service? Did you find them on digital point forums?

Look forward to your response!

Shannon, I have an assistant who helps me out with my offline business. She's a university student, and very quick to learn things. She didn't know a thing about blogs but I just spent a bit of time training her. Plus I wrote out extremely detailed instructions for each blog she's working on.

I think finding someone locally is a good idea. I've actually been thinking about posting some ads at one of the career centers at the local college. For a college student, the work is great because they can do it according to their own schedules.

I've also used forums for outsourcing, too - not for the blogs, but for article writing. I've never used Digital Point or Sitepoint, though. My best results have come from writers who frequent some of the forums I hang out in, particularly a private forum that I joined a couple of months ago.

I've gotten bad results from outsourcing a couple of times, too - once was for link building, and another time it was for a blog design. I'm waiting on graphics for another project right now, and that's running a bit behind. But I find that as long as the person you've outsourced to is fairly prominent in the forum where you've found them, they're usually pretty reliable.

Hope this helps a bit - good luck!
