Lopsided Thinking

November 27, 2007

Every now and then, I like to indulge in some lopsided thinking - you know, so I can catch myself later. Keeps me on my toes.

I have two sites that are roughly similar in terms of the types of products they sell. Both are in broad, broad niches (too broad, but that's a whole other story). Site A uses a template that just drives me nuts - I add one wrong thing, and the whole thing goes weird and crazy in Internet Explorer. (Firefox doesn't seem to mind, though). Site B uses a clean template, and is a breeze to update.

Site A is a search engine magnet. It has four times the number of visitors as Site B, and a lot of my pages rank high. Site B does well, but nowhere near the volume that Site A does.

The past two months, I've been adding more product pages to both sites. But I just realized today that I've been doing it kind of backwards.

I want to drive Site B to the top of the search engines, so I've been promoting it. Not that I've been neglecting Site A, but I visualize Site B doing just as well as Site A.

Here's where I kind of messed up. I've basically been treating the two sites equally. I've been adding as many, if not more, product pages to Site B as I've been adding to Site A.

I just checked out my sales from all the networks for the past month, and there's a very clear pattern. Site A makes a lot more sales than Site B. (Not surprising).

So, wouldn't it make more sense for me to add more product pages to Site A than to Site B?

You'd think so. I personally think so. I'm not too sure where my mind's been the past two months.

I'm not even going to think about how many more sales I'd have right now if I'd been a bit more clear-headed about this!

Guess what I'm going to be doing today?
