It's a Funny Feeling, Not Relying on Google
April 13, 2007
I've been in full "content and value" mode these past few weeks. Writing a lot of stuff, going forum cruising, getting to know the blogs in the neighbourhood, so to speak ... still in the soft-launch phase for both of my content sites.
And it's the strangest thing. Each of these sites carries Adsense, but not in a prominent place. More of a "by-the-way" type of thing. Short-term, I'm looking for visitors sticking around, wanting to read. Newsletter sign-ups. Return visits.
My page views are important.
A new link from another site makes me happy.
I'm not as excited about Google's visitors, although I'm starting to see that some of them are signing up for my newsletters, so it's all good.
It's a very funny feeling not to feel like I have so much invested in getting Google to like me. And the really funny thing is that, the way this all works out, the more my readership climbs, the better Google will probably like me!
So far, the stats for one of my sites have been consistently climbing. The other site has not had much exposure - I'm still working on the content - so the visitors are minimal.
I've been getting newsletter signups every day, too, which is nice.
It's a different sort of rhythm. I'm liking it, but I'm glad I have my Google-reliant sites, too. They're still pulling in income regularly, along with my Adwords campaigns, which makes it much easier for me to look at my new content sites and feel good that the profit will come in the long-run.
It's all a good mix. I'm liking all of this very much again.
