Some Spreadsheet Insight
January 25, 2007
I've been tackling my spreadsheets again. Ever since I had that "aha" moment last year when I put all my earnings for the month onto a spreadsheet and realized I was so far ahead of where I thought I was, I've had a healthy respect for spreadsheets.
That earlier spreadsheet was a bit of a mishmash, because my main focus was on seeing exactly how much I was making, and from what programs. Initially I had all my sites in there, but that just felt too hard to juggle, and I ended up just marking in the various affiliate programs and other revenue sources and plugging the numbers in as the cheques and payments came in.
This time around, I've decided to get myself really organized, so I've been setting up spreadsheets for just about everything that I can think of. This is my year of promotion for my sites - I feel like I haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg on that - and I'm exploring a few strategies, each of which definitely benefits from the use of a spreadsheet.
But my latest bit of insight came from a revision of last year's earnings spreadsheet. This time around, I decided to tackle my original plan, the one that I just didn't have time to keep up last year - I have more time this year, and it's being put to good use.
So I've been tracking the daily earnings of every single website I have online. My initial idea was to get a clearer focus on the duds and the potentials, and pinpoint the sites I want to throw my promotion efforts behind.
My insight? I have a number of sites that make between one to two dollars a day. And the thought came to me, that it's not really that difficult to get a site up that makes that teeny tiny bit daily. Mine weren't making that money by design, of course. Purely accidental since I always have big goals for all my sites.
So what if I did do this by design? What if I played around with things and actually tried to put together small sites and just targeted a dollar or two a day with them? If I ended up with a group of them, that would count as passive income, I think.
I feel the beginnings of another personal site-building challenge coming on. Gulp. I didn't fare too well the last time I did this.
I think I'll sleep on this one.
Edit: Hmmm. I see that I was already toying with this idea in my mind last week when I posted about passive income. It's funny how the mind works and moves you along to various "new" ideas.

I've been thinking of doing this very thing for a while - I've got upwards of 40 sites and I have a feeling I really could get them each earning a dollar or two a day, like a few of them are, BUT THEN, haha, I also really want to focus on one to see how that works. I'm torn :)
But I can't wait to see if you come up with another interesting challenge - if so, I'll probably have to add it to my goals!

Now that's tempting, Jenn. Now that I know you're going to in on it with me, I'm really thinking about working on another challenge.
I think I'd approach it a different way this time - longer timeline, not so much stress. And the sites would have to be a lot smaller in scope and much much easier.
I love that we both are having similar thoughts at roughly the same time. There's an energy flowing here, and I really want to take advantage of it!

I agree, I think we've been on the same page for a while and I'd definitely be excited about going into a challenge together!
