Strange Log File on my Computer

November 20, 2006

This morning I discovered a folder on my C drive containing a log file named "msxml4-KB927978-enu.log".

I run a fairly well-protected computer, with a firewall and an virus checker that's free and updated daily , and I was a bit alarmed when this file showed up.

But, it looks like it's okay. Apparently Windows updates write a temporary log file onto your hard drive but in the most recent update, for some reason, the log file wasn't deleted afterwards.

So if you see a strange folder on your computer that's just a long random-looking number and alpha string, with a log file inside it like msxml4-KB927978-enu.log, and your computer recently experienced a Windows update, Google the name of the file and you should see that all is well..

What a relief. I definitely do not like seeing strange files appearing on my hard drive!

I too found the same file on my computer. Any harm in deleting it?
