Having a Renaissance Personality

November 13, 2006

I have always been one to have multiple projects on the go at all times. And in the face of all that's out there that admonishes, "Focus on one thing and Succeed", I've more or less settled into a comfortable acceptance of the fact that, successful or not, I have what I like to call a Renaissance personality.

This diversity of interests is reflected not only in the multitude of projects I always seem to have on the go, but also in the number of things I develop an interest in at any given moment.

To put it in a nutshell, I am in love with lifelong learning.

So, needless to say, I was absolutely thrilled to see Lynn Terry's post, Diverse Interests & Multiple Projects, where she talks about stumbling onto a post at Free the Drones neatly titled, Want to be Smarter? Take up Multiple Hobbies.

Which then lead me to this article on the benefits of cross-training your brain.

So if you're unlikely to become the world's top alligator wrestler and sales executive, should you pour your energies into one single-minded pursuit?

The short answer is no. The short explanation is plasticity.

Your brain, it turns out, isn't a fixed mass that shapes your behavior. Your behavior also shapes your brain. If a gardener takes up a serious interest in engineering, for instance, her neurons form new pathways between previously isolated regions.

Not that I needed any more affirmation that it's okay to have a lot of different interests and learn a lot of different things. Still, it kind of tickles me to see that there are some scientifically explained benefits to being a person who has "diverse interests and multiple projects".

I recently discovered some learning techniques that utilize more of a holistic brain approach that I will be trying out over the next few weeks: periscopic learning or "borrowed genius" and ImageStreaming. And I just received my Photoreading course, which I bought after I read Steve Pavlina's recommendation (I made use of the hefty discount he offers, too).

How any or all of this will apply to Internet and affiliate marketing, I don't have a clue. But I know there'll be benefits somewhere down the line. And in the meantime, doing the stuff is so much fun. And really, that's pretty much the point to all of this, isn't it?
