This Blog Is Staying Put
October 24, 2006
Earlier this month I wrote about how I had "move this blog from Typepad to Wordpress" on my to-do list. It's kind of funny, but both of the "big changes" that I was contemplating in that post are no longer on my to-do list.
Not because they've been done.
But because after I wrote that post, the Universe began moving to get those two things off my list. And, as is always the way, both items are no longer "to-do", in ways I hadn't expected.
(That's one reason why when you have a desire, it's always better to get yourself to the feeling of having the desire, rather than plot out how you'll get there - there are always so many more paths than you could possibly expect.)
The upgrading to the semi-dedicated server issue isn't an issue anymore. I've decided to stick with my basic Hostgator account, and try out another webhost's solution that came highly recommended (once I have an account there and experienced it for a bit, I'll let you know how that goes. In my experience, you've got to take that wait and see attitude when it comes to a new server). It's not that I don't like Hostgator, because I do, but I have so many sites on there, and the thought of transferring them all doesn't make me feel very good.
So I'm not going to do it.
(I love solutions like that)
The second "big change" on my to-do list was my desire to move this blog from Typepad to a Wordpress platform. The main reason I have been thinking about doing this is because I'd like to eventually set up an email list that will send a list of new posts weekly to readers who don't use feeds. Plus, of course, there's the matter of all those lovely Wordpress plugins that I have to forego right now.
The domain name for this blog is registered at GoDaddy, and in doing my research, it appears that if you run an email list, GoDaddy isn't the best place to have your domain name registered. If you search (especially at the Warrior Forum) you'll see that people have not had good experiences.
But I recently discovered that Namecheap (where I also have several domains listed) also provides custom DNS services, which is what I need in order to have my own domain name for this blog (you can do this with Typepad using domain mapping).
And then, scouting around the Typepad site, I realized that there are all manner of lovely little widgets that I can use here if I wanted.
The thing that clinched the deal is stumbling onto a blog designer who specializes in Typepad blogs. I've emailed her and am waiting to hear back. Even if that doesn't work out, though, it's set in motion the idea of actually redesigning this blog.
So not only is this blog not moving, but we're in for a blog redesign, hopefully!
