Making Changes

October 09, 2006

I'm not sure why it's so hard for me to make big changes. Wait a minute - I know why it's hard. It's always a challenge to implement large-scale change. What I mean is, why is it so hard for me to make the decision and take that fist step to implementing a change that I know is for the best?

There are two "biggies" on my to-do list right now.

First, I want to move to a semi-dedicated server at Hostgator. I've been meaning to do this for the past few months now, but have just never gotten around to it. And now it seems to me like maybe right in the midst of the holiday shopping season is not really a good time to implement something like this. So I've more or less decided to put it on hold until the new year.

But I can't help but think, if I'd only done this back in the summer when things were sliower, it would be done now. And back in the summer, it really was a no brainer.

Second, I've been trying to decide whether to move this blog from Typepad to Wordpress. It was actually a difficult decision to make, because Typepad has been very good for several of my sites. But if I want to take things to a whole new level with this site, I'm going to need to be on a regular server.

I finally did get around to making a decision after the most recent Google toolbar PR update a few weeks ago. If you've got your browser set to show you PR, you'll see that I've got a n/a on this blog. Usually this means that sometime or other, when Google's bot came around, my main page was down. And when I check Google cache for this site, I'm getting nothing. A little snooping around, though, shows that I do have something in Google's cache for my individual post pages, from September 29.

It's not really a big deal, but it's enough to nudge me towards moving onto a Wordpress platform at one of my servers (most likely Hostgator. Yes, I am still in love with Hostgator.)

The main problem I'm going to have is losing my page names when I import my blog posts. It's a bit tricky so of course thinking about it just makes me want to put it off. I do have a few ideas about how to manage the change, but again, it involves another set of decisions.

Then there's the matter of having everyone who does happen to follow my (very sporadic over the summer, I know) posts change over the feed URL for this blog in their feed readers (and yes, now i'm thinking, why didn't I go the Feedburner route?)

Well, it's Thanksgiving here today. I'll just mull on things a bit more - the turkey awaits!

I see you as a PR6 ;)

I know all too well what you mean about putting things off. I have been putting off switching out my Adsense account but I really NEED to do it ASAP!

Happy Turkey Day!

That's funny - Jen mentioned that too a while back. But I just see n/a with my Firefox plugin. And there really is no way I could be a 6. Which really goes to show how off toolbar PR really is! :)
