Watching My Indexed Pages

June 02, 2006

So lately I've added another time waster to my daily schedule. I'm finding it's right up there with checking stats, checking stats, checking Adsense, checking affiliate networks, checking stats, checking Adsense, checking stats ... did I mention checking stats?

Anyway, my latest thing is to do the "site:domain.com" search at Google to see how many of my pages are in the index. I started doing this when one of my sites popped out of the sandbox to raving Google reviews (sort of), only to fall, fall, fall from grace in a couple of days. Since then it's been absolutely fascinating, because Google can't seem to make up its mind about this site.

Some days there are barely any pages from this site in the index. Other days the number skyrockets and it looks like Google's got all the pages in the index. It's up and down and up and down and up and down. Fascinating to watch day by day.

So then, of course, I began keeping an eye on some other sites. And while most of them seem to maintain a fairly steady presence in Google's index, I have a few others that behave in much the same way.

I can't quite figure it out. But at least, it gives me something else to do when I get bored checking my stats or how much I've made so far that day.

I suspect that you are hitting different datacenters each time as this would account for the fluctuations - but I could be wrong :)

BJ, have you tried the Search Status extension for FireFox?
It gives you the ability to instantly query Google, MSN and Yahoo for all back-links pointing to the current page as well as all pages indexes for the current site.
It is one of those tools that I use every day (frequently more than once each day!)

Well, Google's stand is very apparent from its wicked intentions. Google's sole aim is to earn revenue with relevancy lost in the graveyard..

I have found a site http://www.organicspam.com that has impressed me with its motive and content. They have openly raised sword against Google. Will have to say that this is definitely a bold move
