Sandboxed Again
April 03, 2006
Well, I've been sandboxed yet again. I've got so many of my little darlings playing in Google's sandbox these days, I could start a daycare of them, I think.
Each time I've launched a site this year, my new sites have been indexed and given Google love for between two to three weeks. My Adsense results definitely improved during this "birth" period, despite the rollercoaster ride of existing, out of the sandbox, sites.
So I guess one key would be to just keep launching new sites every two to three weeks - well, okay, every month might be easier - and sooner or later your babies will start to toddle out of the sandbox and start playing in the big world.
It makes me tired just thinking about it, though. I've started looking over some of my existing sites instead, especially the ones that aren't doing that well - it may well be "makeover time" for some of these, to take advantage of the fact that they're well-indexed and no longer in the sandbox.
Each of the new sites I launched this year have pulled in a fair number of searches via Google during the first few weeks after indexing, and I'm eager to see whether they will continue to do the same once they pop out of the sandbox, or if that's just something that Google does in the first few weeks. My most recently sandboxed new site actually pulled in almost 300 visitors on one rather memorable day, about a couple of days before sandbox playtime started.
Of course, I could be old and gray by the time any of these sites pop out of the sandbox, but I'll keep you all updated.

I have a suggestion and it seems to work pretty well for me. When I think of a new idea for a project I buy the domain, put up 2-3 page site on the topic and then link to it, then forget about it for a year. By the time I'm ready to use it the domain is "aged", has some backlinks and is well outside any "sandbox" effect, real or imagined ;) I play it safe. I've got so many projects going that this method serves me well. It also lets me see domains that may have strength on their own (like blind search traffic, type ins, etc.). It works pretty well. I know you've always got a lot of project cooking to so this might be something you could try. This way all that early hard work, like blogging or adding content doesn't fall into limbo while no one can find your sites.

I have done the buy and hold technique on the domain name, and I am thinking of doing a lot more of it because it seems to work out well.

It's exactly the same with me, BJ, and last fall/winter I was starting a new site every few weeks for that very reason, but now I'm in makeover mode.
I like the idea of buying a domain, getting a link or two, then starting work on it later - it's just that whenever I buy a domain, I get so eager to work on it that I can't let it sit!
17 of my babies in the sandbox... here's to one day getting out!

Chris, that is an excellent idea. I am going to have to give that a try. I've got about 9 domains sitting around right now that I have plans for. I think I'll just put them up there and get them spidered and sandboxed now. It sounds like it's working for you and Brent.
And Jenn - SEVENTEEN in the sandbox??? And I thought I had it bad! I hope they all pop out soon.

I found a great e-book recently about VEO (Visitor Enhanced Optimization) authored by Colin McDougall. I have not fully read the book yet, but it is very interesting. Rosalind Gardner even gives this author praise for his techniques. He has had three websites get top 10 results in Google (for competitive keywords) within three weeks of their submission to Google. Now that is awesome by my standards! I am working on my first affiliate website using his techniques. I plan to have it ready for submission by the end of next month. I will keep you updated on well it does with its submission. If you want to check out his techniques then his website is www.veoreport.com
You can do a Google and find reviews of his site. That is how I found Rosalind Gardner's review of his techniques. Anyhow, I think I will try out the domain thing as well. Doesn’t hurt to try multiple techniques...
