Moving Blogs to New Webhost
April 04, 2006
I just moved two of my blogs over to a new server today, and I am quite amazed at a couple of things. First, it was quite easy. And second, my nameserver changes seem to be taking effect really fast.
The last time I moved a domain to a new server, it took the full 48 hours that they warn you about. I knew because I had a complete redesign of the site up at the new server, and for two days, things kept switching back and forth between the old design at the old server, and the new one.
This time around, I'm moving blogs instead of websites, but it turns out it's just as easy as moving a site. The only part I was a little nervous about was importing the database at the new server, but with phpMyAdmin it was quick and painless.
Before I changed the nameservers, I posted to each of the blogs about moving servers, and how there might be downtime as a result. Since the databases I imported didn't include this post, I ended up being able to tell if the URL was going to the new server or the old one.
I checked the first blog I moved a couple of hours after I changed the nameservers, and it was already pointing to the new server. I've been checking it sporadically throughout the day, and each time I've landed at the new server. The second blog I checked an hour after I changed the nameservers, and I was landing at the new server.
The thing I'm happiest about is that now I know how to move a blog! I'd been a little worried because moving a blog was a "big unknown" (in other words, A CHALLENGE), and I didn't the possibility of being stuck at a webhost I wasn't happy with simply because I didn't know how to move my Wordpress installations.
I recently signed up with a fabulous webhost, and I've been liking it there a lot. (It's Hostgator, by the way - feel free to sign up under my affiliate link if you've been looking for a good webhost.)
In this case, I'm still pretty happy with the existing webhost where these blogs were located, but Hostgator has amazing support: 24/7 live support, plus email support, plus a forum - and believe me, I had a few glitches when I originally signed up with them and tested their support system to the fullest. I have been very impressed with them so far, and so I've decided to move my major sites over to Hostgator, and keep my smaller niche sites at my two other webhosts.
(I also don't like the feeling of relying on a single webhost, since I do have a lot of sites.)
You know, a year ago, I would have hired someone to do this for me. Can you see me smiling here? I love affiliate marketing and web publishing - it's nice to be always learning.
