My New Adsense Challenge
March 20, 2006
Four days ago, I embarked on a new Adsense challenge.
No, this time around, it's not to make X amount of money in X amount of time.
This challenge has a more personal flavor to it. See, I've been getting a little frustrated at the fluctuations in my Adsense earnings. I'd go from a day where I start thinking to myself, "Whoa! Is this good, or is this good? No, this is definitely GOOD!" to (quite literally the next day) "Wait a sec ... what ...? Where?" - and most importantly, the thought of making several monthly payments using my Adsense earnings begins fading.
Which really, is just too much for me to handle.
So I've decided to lay off checking my Adsense stats for a week. It's far too stressful to go on that rollercoaster ride of glee to frustration then back to glee. I need a break.
I have to say, though, that committing to not checking my Adsense stats for seven whole days is very very difficult. I didn't realize just how addicted I am to that Adsense button in my bookmarks toolbar. Do you know, I think I go to click on that bookmark at least ten times in a day? It's ridiculous.
And just maybe, I'll find that I'm more productive because at least, I'm saving myself the ten seconds X ten plus times that I would otherwise spend checking my Adsense.

I am totally addicted to checking my Adsense, I have tried to stop but I just can't. I have been able to cut back to about 5 times a day. That's the best I can do, and I get depressed when no one clicks since the last time I checked, then if I get a couple lucky clicks I get excited. it's the biggest waste of time, good luck to you, I hope you can make it a whole week, I know I can't.

LOL - the stats checking virus - all affiliates and contextual advertisers get it, especially early on. But a week is a bit harsh :)... I check my stats once a day - in the morning - and only look at the previous day. And yes, stopping the stats virus will increase your productivity. :)

Rae, don't tempt me by offering me the excuse that it's too harsh!
This is almost killing me ... I'm going into day 6, so I just have to get through until tomorrow night (I have timed it to the second).
Brent, I know exactly what you mean about those "lucky" clicks. I have a few sites that I have more or less abandoned, thinking that maybe I'll just not renew the domain next time around, and then I get those clicks, they're for really really nice amounts, and I start wondering, hey, maybe I was onto something when I first developed these sites ...

My wife and I check our Adsense at least 70 times a day each. I counted it once and it was shocking. If our Adsense would level off for awhile, maybe we would stop, but it keeps going up.
I find that if you look at month end, or week end stats you can see a pattern that is much more stable than one would think. We also monitor PPC accounts all day to. We have been trying to cut back home much we work too. We usually get up around 8:30AM and work until 9-10PM. Just plain ridiculous.
It's brutal and exciting all at the same time.
