Going Back to Fun and Passion
March 16, 2006
It's been quiet here, I know - I haven't exactly been a stellar example of "how to blog regularly".
After all those months of really hard work, I've been thoroughly enjoying having less deadlines. I've also been ramping up the blogging end of my business, and that's taken up a bit of time, too.
Lately, though, I've been really thinking about going back to the fun and passion of building sites. It seems like last year, all I kept doing was throwing up fun sites that didn't have any money-making potential. But I really wanted to do them, and so I did.
But this year, I've been working hard at putting up more affiliate sites, and more revenue-generating blogs, and while I've still been buying domain names for fun ideas, I haven't done a thing with any of them.
I tell you, it feels strange.
But here's the thing: I've been looking through all the ideas that really really thrill me - all the fun stuff - and it just seems to me such a shame that I don't have a single fun site that is also revenue generating. I'd like to change that, so I've been trying to figure out if there are any nuggets in my idea vault that will be both fun and have profit potential.
I think I have one, maybe two "fun and profitable" site ideas. Earlier this year I tested Adsense code on a site of mine that I was doing for fun. It's a site that I never actually meant to be anything other than a fun site. I built it for a specific purpose (although I must say, I really lucked out on the domain name). But I'm amazed at the Adsense income that clicks on this site generate. It's not exactly a site that gets a ton of hits (on many days, it gets none) but when the clicks do happen, the amounts are quite nice.
Even so, I kind of just let the site sit there, because there's no way I could keep building the site based on its original specific purpose.
I have another site that is on a similar theme. So I think I might take both of these for a spin, see what happens.
It's days like this that I love what I do! Playing with ideas has got to be one of the best things about working online.
