Am I Brave Enough?

January 25, 2006

Edit: I spelled Steve's last name wrong - now corrected! Have I ever mentioned, I'm not very good with names?

There are four feeds that I read consistently, and Steve Pavlina's blog is one of them. Ever since I discovered Steve's blog back in the fall, I've devoured every article he's written, and experienced a lot of shifts in my patterns of thinking as a result.

Steve's post today is ostensibly entitled, How to Build a High-Traffic Web Site (or Blog) , but what it's really about is overcoming fear and living authentically as a web publisher.

This post comes at a good time in my life. I'm in the process of launching a bunch of blogs, very heavy on the niche-factor and extremely SEO-tweaked, but I've also been thinking for the past couple of months about going back to my passions, and putting up a site that is less about me trying to make a full-time income at all of this, and more about me writing about what I love, fulfilling the purpose that I see for myself.

I just haven't quite figured out that purpose yet, but that's okay. I know I'm headed in the right direction.

Steve's post is very long, but don't let that put you off. You can always print it out for later, and if you really want to get to the nitty gritty of it, just make sure you read the very last point:

10. If you forget the first nine suggestions, just focus on genuinely helping people, and the rest will take care of itself.

Perhaps the biggest message I get out of his post is the importance of letting go of fear. I'm not sure I'm brave enough yet to implement his webpublishing blueprint, but it's good to know his advice is out there when I am ready.

I can't quite remember where I found this mantra, but it was somewhere online and I've been using it for a couple of weeks now. It's helped me feel more courageous.

"Feel the fear, do it anyways."

I've been trying to 'let go' of my fears for a while now, but I'm discovering that 'confronting them' may be a better path for me.

I know what you mean by fear hon... fear of not doing well, fear of doing TOO well, fear of not doing it right the first time, fear of not doing enough. But I think I know you well enough to know you'll get over it when you're ready - and you'll do great! I love your blogs. My vote is do the fun stuff TOO :)

Kevin, confronting fears is always a good thing, but I kind of did things the other way around. I spent a lot of years confronting my fears, and doing that got me a lot of places and sent a lot of opportunities my way, but lately my path has been to live with less resistance, and simply feel good. So instead of confronting my fears, I just follow my intuition. I find that the more I use my intuition, the "better" it is. :)

Tara, that gets my vote, too - do the fun stuff! 2006 is the year I'm going to do the stuff that makes me laugh, makes me happy and is just plain enjoyable - and yes, it will make money too. I'm sure of it!

Curious, what are the other three feeds that you read consistently?

Posted by: Chris | Jan 26, 2006 9:52:40 AM

Chris, I try to read these feeds every day (and in this very order, too!):

1. Abraham Quotes: http://www.abraham-quotes.com/
2. Steve Pavlina's Blog (see? I spelled his name right!): http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/
3. Problogger: http://www.problogger.net
4. Performancing: http://performancing.com/
Update: Actually, there are five feeds I read regularly. I almost forgot Steve Rubel's MicroPersuasion: http://www.micropersuasion.com/
