Adsense Smart Pricing: Google Responds
November 02, 2005
There's recently been a lot of discussion about Google's smart pricing policy, which started when a forum poster at Webmaster World posted about some things his Adsense rep had told him. Jensense has a summary of this conversation, along with various other bits of information gleaned about Adsense smart pricing, here.
Now Google has responded, in its blog:
We've noticed a lot of talk recently about the phenomenon commonly referred to as 'smart pricing'. There are some misconceptions out there about this, so we wanted to provide a few facts about smart pricing and how to ensure you're maximizing your revenue.
Google then goes on to list and explain four points:
1. Many factors determine the price of an ad
2. Clickthrough rate doesn't affect advertiser return on investment (ROI)
3. Google doesn't make money from 'smart pricing'
4. Remember the old chestnut: "Content is King"
I've been pretty disappointed myself with how Adsense has been performing on my sites - my CTR has stayed the same, page views have shot up, and amount per click has slipped into truly low low levels..
"Content is king" is nice and everything, but considering a lot of my sites sport my very own original (and very witty and mesmerizing, I might add) content, it doesn't seem to be doing the trick for me.
