Adsense Referral Program
November 04, 2005
Google's rolled out a new referral program for Adsense. The payout sounds pretty good - you get $100 for every person you refer, when that person earns their first $100.
There's no text link, though. You have your choice of a few banners, including:

I wouldn't exactly say the banners are particularly pretty, but I guess they probably blend into a sidebar well enough.
(Update on my post below: I wonder if you actually can run both referral programs on the same page? I am seeing this being done on a lot of sites ... More update - I emailed Google and got a reply. The answer is no.)
Jensense points out that publishers will now have to decide which referral program they want to promote on their sites, Adsense or Chitika. That's a tough one, because you probably have more prospects with Chitika since it's new and less people are in the program, but then again, Adsense has that Google brand name going for it.
Chitika's referral program pays out 10% of whatever the people you've referred earn over the first 12 months they use the program. So basically, if the people you refer make more than $83.33 a month (had to haul out the trusty calculator for that one) you'll make at least what the Adsense referral program pays or more. If they make less, you'll make less than you would have with the Adsense referral program, if the person you referred makes at least $100. I also didn't see any mention of a time limit with the Adsense referral program, so I'm guessing it doesn't matter how long your referral takes to earn that first $100.
If people sign up through your Adsense link and then make mere nickels a day (it's been known to happen), it will be a while before you see any money. Chitika pays out after you've earned $10 (if receiving payment via Paypal) or $50 (if receiving payment by check) in commissions.
Adsense is also offering a Download Firefox with Google Toolbar program that pays $1 for every referral who downloads Firefox with the Google Toolbar installed. Unfortunately for me, the program is only open to U.S. publishers.
All the Chitika links in this post are my affiliate links, by the way.

Hi there. With this new wave for Adsense implementing a referral will we see more guys like the AdsenseJerk.com coming around cleaning up on the newest "ways" to implement adsense and make money?
Sincerely-
Chris

We probably will, Chris. The thing that irks me about these different adsense infoproducts is that, if you take a little bit of time, you'll find all of that information is free. There's even a transcript of a Google seminar in which things like placement are discussed.
(I posted about this but don't have the site url at hand right now).
And really, the quickest way to figure out what placement to try is to Google the most competitive keywords you can think of, and see how these guys place their ads. You can bet they've tested and tracked the various ad placements. (You don't get to the top of search results of terms in the credit or bad loans field just by accident.)
So in answer to your rhetorical question, I'd have to agree with your thoughts, that's for sure!

Why would someone have to choose *between* the referral programs? Why not both?
Or do I actually have to sit down and READ the AdSense tos lol!

Hi, Carrie,
I think Google considers the referral program like the Adsense ads, so you can't have both going on the same page.
Jensense has a great post on her blog about the new tos: http://www.jensense.com/archives/2005/11/adsense_policie_1.html
But anyway, here's the bit in the TOS that probably comes into play: "A single referral button per product may be placed on a page, in addition to the ad units, search boxes, and link units specified above. Referral buttons are considered to be ‘Google ads’ for purposes of these program policies."

Ok...So I guess you guys didn't know you can use the Kontera DynamiContext links on the same page as Googles Adsense!? Its the only one so far that I know of that you can use with adsense. I am sure alot of companies are going to use this as a marketing angle for consumers. Oh and BJ would you be willing to give up your methods you used for search engine optimization on your husbands website? I am curious as what you did? Blogger to blogger! Thanks...oh and in my last post I talked about the increasing info products on adsense, etc... check out these guys here...are they another jerk and does anyone know who this is? www.AdsenseJerk.com

Hi, Chris,
I just took a look at the site - it sounds like he's building a list by offering a free course on Adsense ...

Chris got the URL wrong its http://www.theadsensejerk.com
Check the Alexa Rankings, adsensejerk.com seems to be a copy of that! Lame!
The real one is excellent though!
