That Little Thing I Did Last Week

Last week I wrote about how Google is finally sending search visitors to a site that I've had up for a while. I mentioned that two days previously, I had done a little tweak, and odd as it seemed, I thought that that little tweak might have done the trick.
The reason it seems so odd to me is the whole timeline. But I can't think of any other reason why, out of the blue, Google would start ranking me higher for some of my keywords. I haven't been doing any link exchanges, submitting articles or anything of that sort for the site. I just keep adding the occasional page, and Googlebot has always come around with the same frequency as the other SE bots.
Anyway, what I did was to add a link to the site from the footer of another one of my sites. I've always been a bit leary about cross-linking, especially between sites that aren't blogs, but I was getting somewhat frustrated because I get a nice steady stream of traffic from Yahoo (and the past few days, from MSN - hey, is everyone using MSN search more or what?) and for nearly a year, Google never sent a single visitor to the site.
And the click amounts on my Adsense for the site have recently experienced a nice jump (relatively speaking, of course, since for a while there I was seeing 4 cent and 6 cent clicks, and on a wild day, maybe 10 cent clicks).
Not to mention Christmas being on the horizon (another post, that).
I added that link on a Tuesday, I think, and two days later, on a Thursday, Google's sending visitors and when I check, one of my keywords is actually on the main page of results.
(Still is. So it wasn't a fluke or some sort of temporary shuffle thing).
So maybe it can work that quickly. Or maybe I'm way off base here, and there were other factors in play, like GoogleGuardianHoveringCloseBy deciding to give my site flavor of the day ...
