I Can't Quite Figure This Out

October 09, 2005

Here's something that's puzzling me a bit. Does anyone know the answer to this?

I have a Wordpress blog with a PR of 5. When I go to the admin panel, though - you know, that password protected admin panel that I didn't think the bots could get into - the little toolbar shows a PR of 6.

How on earth does the Wordpress dashboard get PR of any sort, much less a higher PR than the blog site itself?

Very strange.

I have read about other Wordpress users with the same PR. I have not yet heard of why this happens.

Here is my theory:
The google tool bar is not your actual pagerank, it is kind of an estimate and sometimes they get it wrong.
I have seen many examples of their estimates being way off (I consider 2 points way off), here is one example:

pagerank 2 with no links, no nothing.

http://1st-in-reptiles.com/
pagerank 0

The world of google is not perfect.

I just find it so strange that Google actually assigns PR to a page that's not linked to from anywhere and is password protected. Very odd.
