There's a New Blogging Network Launching ...

September 21, 2005

... and it's not mine. I wish!

Actually, it's what I call a "Branded Blog Network", along the lines of Weblogs Inc. and 9rules (did I capitalize/non-capitalize everything right?)

It's b5media, founded by Darren Rowse, of ProBlogger, Duncan Riley of Weblog Empire and The Blog Herald, and Jeremy Wright of Ensight.

(That's quite a list of founders.)

So, what makes them different from the other blog networks?

We think the biggest differentiator we have is that our authors are the heroes. They are the ones that we want to have a huge profile on each blog they write, we want to interview them regularly and we want to see them. Succeed. To us, too many traditional blogging networks (if there is such a thing) focus on the blog network owners succeeding. We believe that if our bloggers succeed, eventually we will too.

Beyond that, we also want to work towards covering areas that wouldn’t typically be covered by blogging networks. Sure, we’ll have sports and gadget and finance blogs. But we want to go beyond that. We want to create blogs in “lifestyle” categories. Like one that shows men how to look cool without spending a fortune (www.sheknowsbest.com, which just woke up today and isn’t yet truly “live”). And we want to serve key niches that aren’t yet covered, like aviation (with blogs like FlightNest).

More than anything, though, we want to let our bloggers do things they are passionate about. Many of the newest blogs being launched are in that vein – subjects that our bloggers love and simply needed an outlet for it.

They have a whole list of blogs in the network that have either been launched, or are set to be launched. Pretty interesting stuff.

You spelled it perfectly :)

One thing that separates 9rules from the rest is that all of our members are independent and wholly own their website and content. We wouldn't want to take away any of their content, because that's what makes 9rules great.

b5 is more similar to Weblogs, Inc. than us, simply because they still pay their bloggers and own the content their writers produce. I'm sure there's room in the internet for all of us though :)

Thanks!

Thanks for coming by, Mike. I think the 9rules network has a very nice approach to the whole branded blog network thing, and from a blogger's perspective, it's nice to know your bloggers own their sites and can keep their content - good point there.

Totally agree. I love the 9rules approach ;-)

And Jeremy, the b5 approach is also an interesting approach, with its emphasis on the blogger as the hero. That's definitely building a brand.

There's definitely lots of room on the Internet ... it's a big big place :) I'm looking forward to see both networks do their stuff.
