Revealing Your Sites
September 23, 2005
I've been playing around recently with the idea of linking to some of my sites from this blog. Most of you know that I blog at Adventures in Net Marketing mostly for the fun of it. I do make some affiliate income, but it's not exactly six figure income material.
It's the fact that I'm not making good use of this lovely, unused PR, that's been driving me nuts.
So here's a question for you. If you have a blog that's either personal or marketing-related, do you link to your money-making sites from that blog? If yes, what has your experience been? And if not, why not?

I have revealed a few but I keep the sites I consider bigger and more competitive under wraps. I will show my good friends but thats about it.
So, I guess my answer is alittle bit of both ;) I think its good to show some but not all of them.

I have HTAR revealed on my blog and it started off with decent traffic that has built on itself in that time. My other site that I have done article submissions for (dragging my feet with the third) is still struggling to make double digit traffic per day. I think that the blog is the main reason for HTAR doing as well as it has in the search engines.
It's the smaller, less competitive niches that I would really hesitate to reveal. If you are the king of the mountain there already, no sense letting people know where that mountain is.

Well, I think you know my view on this. I've had no problems so far (knock on wood) and I don't know if I'll share all my future sites, but for now, I will.
I say do it :)

I'm always tempted to post my sites on my blog, but I'm a little afraid for two reasons.
For one, the copying thing - not that my niche discoveries are that brilliant, but a few are pretty untapped - though I have indicated what a few of the broader topics are in my blog.
Another thing is that I'm afraid I'll be penalized for crosslinking or spammy linking somehow... this is probably just me being paranoid, though.
I would love to hear if it has worked out for others over the long run, because it is something I'd really like to do granted it is 'safe'.

I asked the same question on my site a little while ago - I was thinking the same thing, I have PR and I'm not using it! *drive me crazy!*. I had people write in saying that they were afraid of the competition that might ensue with their ideas - understandable, being that the blogs discuss this stuff on is all about affiliate marketing. Another was the lowlifes who steal/hi-jack your links - or make your affiliate life hell.
I personally enjoy reading about other people's sites and being able to see them - not to steal the idea but see how other affiliates "do it" - make their sites successful so that I can perhaps take away some kewl ideas and learn something.
I keep everything rather vague on my site - maybe I shouldn't. It is the Internet after all, and nothing is ever private, is it?
I say - go for it :)

I think one of the reasons I've been thinking about this is the success of a lot of the blog networks, like Weblogs Inc., and unofficial blog networks like Darren Rowse's group of blogs that he runs under a few domains.
It's almost a chicken and egg dilemma, in a way. If I had a large domain in a broader niche that had good PR, I'd probably have no problems linking to it from this blog. But it would be easier to get one of those domains going if I were to link to it from this blog in the first place!
Like a lot of you have mentioned, it's the smaller, more niche sites that I'm more hesitant about. The PR boost would be very nice on the one hand, but on the other hand, if it's a relatively untapped niche, it already does well enough on its own ...
Lots of good thoughts here, you guys!

I say link 'em. Maybe keep the really hot ones in your back pocket, but for the most part I've found that linking gets my site out there and also helps build relationships with others who might have sites on the same subject.

So far, I'm terrified to link to any sites which are earning well - but agree with BJ that a few slow/small earners shouldn't matter... keeping the fav's tucked away in a secret stash for nobody to see (find / plagerize) ;)
