Okay, Fine ... I Got Yahoo'd

July 25, 2005

I don't know about all of you, but I got seriously Yahoo'd by the latest Yahoo algo changes.

That's Yahoo'd for the worse, not for the better, unfortunately. It's been like this for quite a few days now, but I kept hoping that the changes were "still in progress" and maybe things will move back up.

The good news (yes, there actually is some!) is that it only happened to a few of my sites. And MSN finally got around to sending some bots out a while ago to my sites and seems to be trying to pick up the slack (but even with some of the top positions I'm getting at MSN, the only way it's going to carry the full load is if Bill ups the promotion budget for MSN search or pulls some nice little trick out of his sleeve to make MSN search a household word).

Other good news is that my Google rankings are still the same. And the affected sites were more reliant on Adsense than on affiliate programs, so my affiliate sales have been roughly the same.

So I'm not crying (well, not that hard, anyway) but I do have to say, it smarts a little when I log into Adsense. On the other hand, I find I have more time in the day, since I'm better able to resist the urge to log into Adsense frequently now.

I did have one site do well in the recent change. Of course, out of all my sites, it has to be yet another fun site of mine. You know, one of those ones I keep putting up that have a negative 12 percent chance of making money.

Just figures, right?

I haven't done too bad so far on some. One of my new sites is penalized by Y and that will probably be forever... grrr.

My main site did fairly well which is funny. Google always favored the site and for awhile there it seemed like Y did and not G. Now G is loving it and Y just doesn't care.

Did any of that make sense?! I tell ya, one think about AM - its never boring and you can never know too much lol.

One door closes another opens. Something will workout.

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss those fun sites. From the looks of this site, you seem to have SEO ingrained. It's a matter of figuring out what people will find that fun site for.

Did I mention that I'm glad I found your blog? Thanks for writing.

Chrissie, yes, made sense to me :) I have a few sites like that - the SEs seem to want to be exclusive. When Google likes a site, Yahoo ignores it and vice versa. I tell you, it's a plot of some kind to drive us nuts LOL

Thanks, Nikki. You're right - I probably should take another look at my fun sites and see what I can do with them - give people what they want! About SEO and this blog, it's funny, but I don't do anything in terms of SEO for my posts and I do get a lot of search traffic.

Of course, sometimes it's for the weirdest things ... :)
