Days Like Today

July 08, 2005

I hate when I have days like today. I had time to work on anything I wanted, but instead I was so unfocused I ended up working on nothing at all.

I have discovered I have this streak of perfectionism that only pops up when it comes to the look of my sites. I can spend eons tweaking and tweaking my templates - and I'd hazard a guess that this kind of tweaking isn't really going to make my sites any more profitable.

There's also the whole header thing. Whenever I open up Photoshop Elements, I just know I'm going to be there for quite a while. I have a basic knowledge of layers, and yes, I can get it to do what I want it to do (well, eventually, anyway), but all those layers also need to be tweaked. And tweaked. And tweaked a bit more.

I don't know what's worse. Tweaking my stylesheet code, my template html or my header design. But they all add up to wasted time.

I may cave in and get a quick and easy header program.

Think of it as experience, you are not a machine. You obviously have a creative side which is good otherwise you wouldn't be able to come up with ideas.

I beg to differ hon - it's not wasted time at all. Making your site pretty can only help. Besides - you're going to do it anyway, so at least you got it off your plate today. You'll have lots of other days to bang out articles or research or whatever you didn't get done. Keep in mind - you DID DO SOMETHING!

I know the feeling. The thought of people looking at my work drives me to insane lengths in order to get thing "perfect". It's alright, as long as you aren't as bad as I am (which I seriously doubt) you'll be fine=)

Thanks, you guys. The "you're not a machine" quote is perfect, Allan. You're right about that, and it's definitely something to remember!

And Tara, I agree with you about the look of the site. That's partly why I keep tweaking. On the other hand, for some of these sites, I don't really want my visitors to stick around reading my pretty prose, I want them to click and get their shopping done! :) So I guess it's a fine balance. My sites do tend to be a little too sticky - I go in and see my visitors cruising through lots and lots of pages, reading everything. So now I try to go for the bookmarks, at least get them to come back!

Jonny, I probably AM almost as bad as you are (I say almost because your site's nicer looking than any of mine!). Seeing those visitors hitting my site always makes me want to tweak. :)

Think of it like a game. It's all about improving, always improving, beating our previous best. Maybe that little change will trigger something that will give you sales. We're funny that way. Colors DO influence us.
