More Hidden Links
June 10, 2005
I just received my Linking Matters newsletter from Ken McGaffin, and he has something very interesting to report. In doing competitive linking analysis for a client, he discovered that the Financial Times is, for some reason, using hidden links on its site.
I checked out one of the links he mentions in his article (he found a total of 138 hidden links throughout the site), and there is indeed a hidden link on the page, as shown in the screenshot he's posted.
He ends his article with some good questions:
Why does FT.com appear to be ignoring one of Google's top quality guidelines, "Avoid hidden text or hidden links". Such practices are of course also frowned on by other search engines.
...
Why are the links hidden? Six partners are visible on FT.com with links to their respective websites. Why is Moneysupermarket.com not listed visibly with the other partners?
If you're talking about respected sites, I'd say the Financial Times definitely fits the bill. It really does make you wonder, doesn't it?
