Bedtime Reading ... and a Book Tag

June 12, 2005

Last night, I sat in bed with one of my keyword binders, looking through the keyword lists for a niche I'm currently working on and trying to figure out what articles I'd write next ...

Now, how pathetic is that? If you were sitting there nodding, thinking about the site-related stuff you're taking to bed with you too, I guess you're in the same boat.

Once upon a time, I used to be an avid book reader.

(I'm just kidding I just don't read as many books as I used to. That "to be read" pile has turned into several teetering columns, making all rooms in my house dangerous to walk through.)

Anyway, this all provides a nice segue into Wendy's book tag:

1. How many books do I own?

Well, since I'm too lazy to go count them all, I can only provide a guestimate. I have eight bookshelves in my bedroom, three bookshelves in the upstairs hallway, five bookshelves in the library, five bookshelves in my office, one bookshelf in the living room, three bookshelves in the front foyer and one bookshelf in the kitchen. They are all full (or nearly full). On average, I'd say each bookcase holds about 20 books per shelf, with four shelves per bookcase. I also have about 15 boxes of books in storage. So I guess a rough estimate would be about 2200 books ...

2. Last Book I Bought:

Build Your Own Database-Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL, by Kevin Yank. Yes. More thrilling bed-time reading material.

3. Last Book I Read:

Nearly got caught here. I almost had to say Bergdorf Blondes (Plum Sykes), but I was almost through Studs Terkel's Working, so I finished it yesterday specifically so I could put it down instead. Great read, by the way.

Not that there's anything wrong with reading Bergdorf Blondes. But let's just say that out of all the fluffy books I've read in the past five years, this has got to be the absolute fluffiest one (although I did learn something from it that was quite interesting, about Brazilians.).

4. Five Books That Mean A Lot To Me:

There are a lot more than five, and having to choose five is just too hard. So I'm going to cheat. Here's a handful of books that I re-read regularly (but if I thought really hard, I'd have a lot more to add to the list):

The Artist's Way (Julie Cameron) - I picked up my morning pages habit from this book. My morning pages are my daily saving grace. I can't imagine not doing them.

On Writing (Stephen King) - the most wonderful book about writing I've ever read.

Bird by Bird (Anne Lamott) - the most wonderful book about writing I've ever read

(I never said I was a particularly decisive soul.)

Waiting for Godot (Samuel Beckett) - I just love this play.

Fanny and Alexander (the script) (Ingmar Bergman) - Bergman includes such wonderful descriptions and directions, and the whole thing reads like a rich novel, just dripping with character.

Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austin) - I discovered this book when I was 13, and I have read it every single year since then. And every time I read it, there's a little bit more to it.

Ask and It Is Given (Abraham-Hicks) - I am fascinated by the concepts in this book. It's a new favorite of mine.

Dancing Wu Li Masters (Gary Zukav) - This book introduced me to the world of quantum physics.

I, Asimov (Isaac Asimov) - A brilliant mind.

Journal of a Solitude (May Sarton) - I enjoy all of Sarton's works, but this is my favorite. Her words just embrace you.

One Man's Garden (Henry Mitchell) - My favorite gardening writer. After reading Mitchell, I always want to start some seeds or plant something or prune something or just sit outside and soak it all in. Every end-of-winter/beginning-of-spring, I pull out all my Mitchell books to re-read.

But the book that means the most to me? That one's easy. Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery.

5. Tag Five More:

Sorry, guys, but you're it: Tara, Jon, Chrissie, Teli and (dare I?) Jscott.

Now there's something I'd love to do when this AM thing kicks off - read again! I recently bought Dancing Wu Li Masters - it's on my list. And what an interesting and varied list of books you've got there - nice!
