More on My Transferred Site

Last night I got the new design for my transferred site up on the new server, and pointed the nameservers to the new host. Then I went to bed.
So this morning I checked, and everything was working beautifully. My new design was showing up in all its glory, except for a few hitches which I quickly took care of. Then I started checking the redirects to make sure they were working. Halfway through, I suddenly ended up back at the old site.
And it’s stayed there since. What’s worse, though, is that half the links don’t work on the old site. Somehow, the .htaccess redirects are working for those links, and when you click on them, it says that the new file name (with the php extension) can’t be found on the server!
And to make matters worse, I’ve been looking at the traffic. Since this weekend is a holiday weekend, I thought it was a pretty safe time to be switching servers. Not a chance! Even with all those “file not found” pages that must be popping up whenever Yahoo sends a visitor to an internal page, my traffic stats are the highest they’ve been for a while.
GoDaddy tells me that it will take about 48 hours for things to settle …
I did the only thing I could think of – damage control. I quickly added text to the top of all the pages, indicating that the site was in the process of being moved, and if some of the links don’t seem to work, please bookmark and visit again later.
I’m not looking forward to doing this again. Or maybe next time I won’t be so ambitious and change my page names and extensions. That way at least I won’t have to do the redirects and everything would be fine.
Funny thing, though. I’m getting quite a few Adsense clicks …
