A Matter of Balance
May 11, 2005
I was shocked today to find that mid-May is already creeping up on me.
It's been a very slow start to the month for me, and the month is already almost halfway over. I haven't done much of anything this past week except for putting up a page a day for the sites I already have up and running.
I've been neglecting my to-do list, that's for sure.
I think I'm recuperating from being too driven last month. At any rate, lately I've been finding myself searching for balance. My husband and I recently decided to give meditation a try. It's been working so far. (Well, okay, we started two days ago so we've only done it twice, but I've definitely been feeling a bit more grounded.)
I'm now moving into a couple of weeks with several offline deadlines, so new site launches will probably be put on hold. I'll keep adding content to existing sites but I don't know if my notebook challenge site will be ready before the challenge ends. (At this late date, though, it's definitely not going to make or break things.)
In the meantime, people like Darren from ProBlogger, Paul from BlogLogic and Scrivs from Work Boxers have been inspiring me to look more seriously into blogging. It's a natural move for me, since a third of my sites are blogs anyway (actually, come to think of it, even most of the ones that aren't blogs have a blog component). The various blog network business models are quite interesting, but of course, with my tradition of going overboard on everything, I have developed ideas for four separate types of blog networks, with domain names registered and everything just waiting for me to spend the necessary time on it.
(Necessary time. I had to laugh when I re-read that.)
So having said that, I thought I'd let you all know that I will be developing a blog on being a working blogger. The domain name is registered and I'm trying to figure out the design. Once that's up and running, I'll let you know where to find it. I'm going to use that blog much like this one - a chronicle of my journey towards being a working blogger.
This post was supposed to be about finding balance, but as you can see, I seem to have found yet another way to tip the balance back into my overdrive mode.

Hey BJ,
Hey, the meditation experiment is interesting. Blog that one up for me, will ya? :-) Seriously, good move on the meditation, that should be a great balancing tool for you guys. Keep us up to date on how that goes for you.
Getting out in to nature works well as a balance to the Net for us. We're even making a site about those experiences at Nature-For-You.com. We get all mellowed out, and then rush home to frantically code it all up. Whoops, there goes the balance, out the window. :-)
Best of luck, still listening here...

It's so funny you asked for an update, Phil (no, really, I mean funny as in synchronicity and not funny hahaha). I think I WILL blog about it, because I had an interesting experience last night. :) Thanks!

Ahh yeah.. finding balance. *smiles*.. I've found that I actually do better on days when I spend _less_ time "online". I always start my mornings (usually between 3-5 AM) by reading my Bible and then, typically an hour or so later, I begin work.
Starting that early, though, it's easy to let yourself go into a 12 hour digital day and that's not really a good thing.
I've found that when I balance things out by helping around the house, doing work outside, writing and planning offline, etc, the time that I _do_ spend online is much more focused and productive.
Keep up the great work BJ. I'm looking forward to reading more :).

P.S. Are you still using the project board?

Jonathan, I hate to tell you this, but at 3:00 a.m. some nights I'm just getting to bed :) But I know what you mean about a 12 hour digital day. I get quite blurry eyed from that, and sometimes things become surreal.
No, I haven't used the project board in a while. I really should, though ... it made me feel quite productive ...
