Waiting Time - and Being Busy

April 25, 2005

I realized today that there's a definite benefit to having a long to-do list filled with ideas to be implemented.

It means I'm busy. Really really busy.

This is actually a very good thing.

Waiting time plays such a big part in the web publishing world. From small waits, like waiting for your DNS to be propagated to your new host, or waiting for your registrar to unlock your domain name so you can mess around with your DNS, to longer waits: waiting for Googlebot, Yahoobot, MSNbot, waiting for traffic, waiting to be in the index, waiting for those first searches, waiting to get out of the sandbox.

But these past few days I've been noticing a big difference. I have a bit of time on my hands - the next offline deadline isn't until the beginning of May - so I've been working hard to get as much stuff implemented as I can.

And it doesn't feel like a waiting game right now. I'm too busy to even think about how the sites I have up are doing. I'm still thinking about the sites themselves, because at the top of my priority list is to add content every day. But the rest of the time I'm too busy working on everything else.

So I've been noticing something strange. I hardly check my stats anymore. I don't log into Adsense quite as often. I'm not counting the number of pages being gobbled by Googlebot today, yesterday, tomorrow.

(Well, okay, when I say "hardly check my stats anymore ... don't log into Adsense quite as often", it's all relative. I'm still checking my stats and I'm still checking Adsense. Just not every other minute, that's all.)

The time is just flashing by, but I'm getting little things and some big things done so it feels okay. I must admit - I've waited a long time to reach this particular stage, where I'm actually taking a lot of action.

But I definitely will check my stats one last time tonight. There is no way I can resist doing that "final check of the night".

It's very true! I'm not quite there yet - almost - but once I finally get into the swing of not having to go to work (within the next week or 2 at most) I think I'll be joining you. On the other hand, I doubt I'll ever be able to stop checking my stats and Adsense every 5 minutes unless I'm away from my computer. It's hardcoded in me now! lol

I suspect that once I start actually making more then spare change with Adsense, I'll be right back to tracking every five minutes ;)
