The Inspiration of Small Successes

March 07, 2005

At times, this really is a difficult field to be in. When you're sitting at the computer, writing your articles, creating and uploading your pages, checking your stats, it can sometimes be hard to stay committed, to persist.

I think that's why we all end up buying various ebooks telling us about how other people made it, or how the writer made it, and how we can, too. It really is a very intense and solitary life, and it's very necessary to stay motivated.

What I've been discovering is the value of small successes. Not only your own, but also those of the people you know or are getting to know. These small successes add up to a huge pool of inspiration.

So here are some small successes that have kept me inspired this week.

Gail has seen a couple of her sites really take off this past week in the SERPs. Maybe Google finally let them out of the sandbox. Maybe her PAD backlinks are taking off. Whatever it is, it's a lovely thing to see. It makes me feel much more positive.

The morning I spent making directory submissions is already starting to have an effect. Someone posted a comment about how it's a waste of time to submit to directories, but it's really just because the results, SERP-wise, are not instantaneous. But traffic-wise, I find that submitting to directories does have an impact. One of my sites is a local one, and submitting to local directories has resulted in a boost in traffic. Some of my other sites are either blogs, or have a blog component, and again, I saw a nice boost in traffic the very next day. So that was another small success to keep me inspired.

And finally, last night I had a small success which I'm hoping will translate to a big success, income-wise. I put up a money-maker page for the local site earlier this week, and held my breath hoping it would be spidered quickly. It's a seasonal type of product, and it's very likely that people will be searching for it starting this month. Last night I was thrilled to see the page had been found and indexed, and it's coming up in the top position for its various main keywords.

So I'm starting this week feeling very inspired. I think I'm going to start keeping track of all the small successes I come across, whether they're mine or someone else's. It's great for those moments when you're working on yet another page, and wondering if you're just wasting your time on a pipe dream.

I just wanted to say that coming here has been motivating for me. We seem to have a 'smiliar style' of doing things. Thanks for the inspiration ;)
