Friends in the Biz

March 04, 2005

There's one thing lots of Internet marketing gurus recommend, and that's forming a "mastermind" group. Now, it's usually recommended that you get into a group with people "who are where you'd like to be" but I've been discovering that having friends in the same business, no matter where in the Internet marketing hierarchy they're at, means a lot.

I think the key word here is "friends". Not "networking", but "friends".

Anyway, I was just musing about this today. I have a good friend (Gail) who's basically where I'm at right now. Well, a little further ahead, actually, because she has two Martell sites up and running. But we've been discovering things together, brainstorming together, and pulling each other up when the other gets down.

And this last thing is so important, I think. Last night I had a bout of "is all of this really going to work?", "am I wasting my time?" and "what the heck am I really doing here?" Several of the projects I'm starting on involve some steep learning curves (or at least, from where I stand, they look steep), and I had a massive case of severe overwhelm.

But after having a long chat with Gail, I signed off Yahoo feeling much better.

There's something incredibly valuable (not to mention wonderful) about having friends in the business. Something that you simply can't buy. Something that I count myself incredibly lucky to have.

Today I woke up sparking with ideas and resolve. I can definitely thank my incredible "mini-mastermind" group of two - me and Gail.

So if you're starting out, or plodding along, building sites, learning new techniques and sparking with ideas, I highly recommend you take the opportunity to meet other people doing the same thing. If their motivation and commitment match yours, it might well be a friendship worth developing.

Hey, that's what friends are for. You know you'd have done the same for me. And you have.

We each bring a different perspective to to the party. That's what makes the "mastermind group" concept so powerful. We become each other's springboard. We can go so much higher by helping each other.

Realizing our goals is important. It's why we work long hours, dream and build. But, it's the journey that really counts. And those who travel with us.

I couldn't agree more. Its hard to talk with friends that don't get your 'online life and business'...

I have a few friends also that are way more advanced then myself and sometimes thats good and bad. I kind of fit somewhere in the middle ;) I am a little overwhelmed myself and I have a big load on my shoulders but I have decided this is going to be my year damn it!! I have a little bit of fear that is stifling me and I am so aware of it and trying to make it go away..

Best of luck with your new projects BJ!
