Blogs and Marketing

March 11, 2005

In cruising around the forums today, I noticed that there's a lot of talk now among marketers about using blogs for Internet marketing. Specifically, a lot of people are using the blog and ping method to ping quite a large number of blog directory sites ... and apparently, the methods out there tell you to do this several times an hour.

There's even a service out there now that will ping your posts for you every fifteen minutes.

That's an awful lot of pings. Needless to say, this will probably end up causing huge problems for the sites receiving the pings. I've also heard people saying they're having a tough time even getting to their Blogger accounts to post.

I think people are really missing the point here about blogs. Blog software is basically content management software with the powerful capabilities of RSS feeds. So using blog software is actually a great way to build a website.

I just stumbled on Blogads' reader survey for blog advertisers, and two things really stand out. First, the average blog reader shops online quite a bit. And second, the average blog reader has a high disposable income. For marketers, that's quite an attractive combination.

So there's a whole lot more to blogs than just mis-using them as mass ping vehicles. If you scroll through the write-up to the actual survey results, there's other interesting stuff there. Mind you, blog readers are still quite a small percentage of the overall Internet readership, but their numbers continue to rise. It's definitely something to think about.
