Synchronicity!

January 04, 2005

So, a couple of days ago I posted about my first experience creating a Web header for a site using Photoshop. I literally have "buy Photoshop tutorial book from Amazon" down on my to-do list, but just haven't gotten around to it.

The header is okay but not great.

Then, yesterday, I posted about the joys of forum roaming, and how I'm really too addicted to it even if it's sometimes a great time waster.

I don't often frequent Michael Green's How-To Forum - I find the forum's design a little too difficult for browsing, and flame wars seem to erupt too frequently for the happy-go-lucky part of me. But I'm on the email list to receive notices of all the forum postings, and occasionally I'll check the mailbox I've filtered them to and see if anything jumps out at me.

So guess what I found just now?

The Gimp is open source image manipulation software that definitely can do all the things I need. And if I get stuck, there are beginners' tutorials that are written in understandable language, as well as a tutorial covering web graphic elements.

If you don't want to download the software (you need to download both the Gimp and GTK+, and make sure you check out the FAQs first), CoolText Logo Generator is based on the Gimp and lets you create graphics online for free.

I'll learn Photoshop one day, but it has a pretty steep learning curve and my to-do list is just so long right now! I'll play around with the Gimp and report back later.

I just love synchronicity. Forums are pretty fun, too. :-).

Congrats on the find :) - I had forgotten about the Gimp...gotta love that synchronicity.

Also, I hope you had an awesome holiday season and very prosperous new year.
