Lots to Think About

January 28, 2005

I've got a lot swirling around in my mind these days. As far as I can tell, there are a lot of "business models" out there when it comes to Internet marketing. And the key to making a living online is to diversify.

Personally, when I hear the phrase "multiple streams of income" I automatically think HYPE ALERT. But of course, that's just a knee jerk reaction. The fact is, you really can't hope to succeed online unless you do diversify, and diversification basically means, yes, "multiple streams of income".

Now, you hear a lot about "passive income" these days. But making passive income online is not anything like making passive income from, say, that trust fund your mommy and daddy set up for you when you were born.

When I look at my to-do list, it's pretty clear that passive income online does not mean sitting back and collecting all those checks. It's a lot of work! Because, quite simply, you can't sit back and relax after you get that first site online, and wait for the money in your mailbox or Paypal account. No way. Not only do you have to move onto your next site, in most cases, at the very least, you have to keep monitoring the sites you already have. And keep adding content.

Even for your datafeed sites, you've got to keep cleaning new datafeeds and re-doing your pages.

This is not a get rich quick industry. (Not even for the get-rich-quick gurus, I might add. They've got things to do too. Newsletters to write, new affiliate products to scope out, writers to hire for all those infoproducts on how you can get rich quick ...)

So anyway, when you add to all of this (not the Internet marketing guru stuff. I mean the web site work) my really really strong desire to publish some online magazines about subjects I happen to love ... well, you get the idea of the workload involved.

What started me thinking about all of these things was Robin Good's post about not accepting any more banner ads on his sites. Although now that I've actually written this post, I am not sure how on earth I jumped from the thoughts in his post to the thoughts in this post.
