Growing a Blog

I found this blog post by Jason Dowdell on his Marketing Shift blog through WebProWorld.
What Jason says about eventually turning your blog into an online trade journal or portal makes a lot of sense. I particularly liked his tips for growing your blog into an industry mecca.
Blogs are definitely great for the small publisher. I think you've got to have passion for your topic, though, as you would with any content site. Combine the passion with Jason's tips and it's definitely a recipe for good things further down the road.
"Growing", however, is the catch word here. The key with a blog is that it's not instantaneous. Whether you want fame, riches, or both from your blog, you won't get that right away (well, not unless you're starring in the latest hot movie and are up for an Oscar).
Which may not be what the get-rich-quick crowd would like to see, but get-rich-quick is very temporal. In the case of blogs, good content is the tortoise and will win the race.
The nice thing is that most get-rich-quick blogs die out pretty quickly (by get-rich-quick, I don't mean the topic of the blog, I mean the motivation behind it). It's just too tough to post regularly with your own original content if you don't actually like your topic. And while some people may consider heading over to Elance for those $5 articles to use as blog fodder, you'll only get the traffic to a blog if your personality comes through in your posts. This is kind of at odds with the whole Elance/outsourcing idea, don't you think?
On the other hand, blogs have other great uses which don't require that passion.They are great for SEO, a good tool for your newsletter, and blog software makes for a nice content management system. But using a blog for these purposes isn't likely to lead to industry mecca status!
