Blogging for Business
December 02, 2004
There's been quite an explosion of blog-related Internet marketing products lately, most of which explain how to use the power of the blog and RSS to get your new pages spidered quickly, keep the spiders coming back, and leverage your PR.
But blogs go beyond SEO. They provide an easy-to-use content management system, and a great vehicle for giving visitors (and repeat visitors, always a good thing) fresh, up-to-date content about your particular niche.
The blog structure itself is fantastic. With a bit of html know-how, you can tweak your blog so that it doesn't look quite so "bloggish", and use the blog structure as your entire site, safe in the knowledge that every article you post automatically creates lovely looking pages for your site.
You can also take a blog, and think of a ton of different uses for it, for almost any type of site. It's quite a creative tool.
To go beyond blog software, for a content management system that is equally user-friendly, you can also give Textpattern a whirl. I haven't tried this open source program yet, but I've heard all sorts of good things about it, and it seems like a great tool to use when you want to build a content site in a hurry (and you already have the content, of course).
And the reason why I started thinking about blogging for business? This thread from WebProWorld.

Hey BJ,
I have an installation of Textpattern on one of my test servers and while it is a great platform, I wouldn't recommend it to newbies because it's relatively new, there isn't much support (although people will try to help you as much as they can in the forums) and the documentation is sketchy at best.
If you don't mind learning custom tags, exploration/experimentation and getting creative - then Textpattern can become a great tool to have.
Also, thanks for the link to that thread - picked up a couple new (awesome) blogs in my reader ;)

Thanks, Teli. Yes, I'd heard that Textpattern was a bit more complex, but it does sound like something that will be good to try once I find my way around Wordpress. It's good to know you're trying it out.
