AVG Problems
December 15, 2004
I had an extremely scary morning here. I use Grisoft's free AVG anti-virus program - I've used it for quite a few years now and I really like it. Grisoft has released a new version, Version 7, and after I downloaded it, I couldn't reboot my computer!
I went on my husband's computer and checked out the forums at Grisoft, and it turns out there's a problem if you download Version 7 and you also have Nero on your computer. My computer has a Nero CD burner on it.
There was also a similar problem with Roxio, but apparently Roxio has released a patch which fixes the problem. (The download link to this patch is posted at the AVG forums)
Of course, for me the big problem was just getting back to Windows so I could so a system restore. It took all morning to even get to the point where we could access the safe mode menu. I breathed a sigh of relief when we did - we were able to start Windows in safe mode and do a system restore. It was scary when the restart didn't work but then we tried again and now everything seems to be running fine.
So we had to decide - the CD burner or AVG? AVG has worked so well for me, and I've been meaning to upgrade to a DVD burner anyway, so we'll go that route and hopefully won't have a problem running AVG v. 7 once the new burner is installed (the kids have AVG v. 7 running on their computers, which are Dell, and it's been working great).
So, if you have AVG v. 6 and are planning to upgrade (v.6 will no longer be supported after January 31), and you have Nero on your computer, read the AVG forums before you download the latest version. If you have a Roxio cd driver, read the forums and consider downloading the patch first.
