I Really Have to Get Organized

October 30, 2004

You know, I really do have to get organized.

I wrote a post yesterday on a thread over at Lynn Terry's SSWT discussion forum about the absolute mess my desk is in right now.

Well, just now, I was looking for some papers for the next assignment ... and I found a cheque I received earlier this week. Still in its envelope. Never been opened.

(I did find the papers, too. Just not in that particular pile.)

And yes. I'm working on the weekend. Again.

I too am self-employed. I like being organized, but when I'm busy (as I have been lately) my office gets to point where I'm tripping over things. I simply have to stop, and spend a few hours cleaning up. I know my office is a mess when I forget to invoice clients. Which is worse: Forgetting to cash a check, or forgetting to invoice in the first place?

I think that forgetting to invoice is definitely worse - been there, done that! At least when you forget to cash the cheque, you do eventually find it and you can deposit it right away. But when you forget to invoice, by the time you remember to make up the invoice it then takes another two to four weeks to see the cheque.

(Also, it feels much nicer to "find" a cheque.)

While I normally invoice right away when I get really busy I tend to put it off, too. Which is why it's so important for me to keep track of deadlines in my daytimer - otherwise I might "lose" an invoice by never preparing one.

And yes, there have been times when I've actually had a client email to ask me to send my invoice! (You'd think I didn't want to get paid ...)

The only positive thing ("positive" isn't really what I mean, but you get the gist) is that when I forget to invoice, it always means I've been really busy, which usually means I won't feel the impact of not having that particular cheque paid on time.

My work area is an utter and complete mess, I promised myself to straighten it up tomorrow ;)

I have have a book addiction - so books are everywhere, papers, files and Sharpies (I have a sharpie obsession... weird I know).

I drive my poor husband crazy, he is way neater than I am ;)

*Finding* a check is way better than losing one which I have done before and pulled my hair out for a week!

I really need to organize my time if anything. I make To Do Lists and never complete them on time.
Organization is a BIG Task!
