Wordtracker Results - Affiliate Marketers Handbook Progress Report

September 22, 2004

Actually, the title of my post is a bit of a misnomer. I've just been over at Wordtracker (finally!) and it is absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, fascinating also translates into time-consuming. It probably would have been better if I had just done simple searches for various keywords, but I couldn't resist playing with the keyword universe tool.

And what a tool it is! I had a list of different "generic" keywords to input, but only managed to do two of them. I ended up with lots and lots of keywords and what's even nicer, I can export them into Excel.

So while I do have some results, I don't have all the results that I wanted. And of course, I couldn't resist doing a search for one of the content sites that I've been thinking of.

Looking at the KEI was interesting, although I think that Sean Burns is absolutely right when he says the KEI is really irrelevant. What's more important is who is on that first page of results at Google, and whether or not you think you can get there yourself.

So here's my progress so far: I've done one search for one of my potential niches, and it does look promising. (My problem with this particular niche, though, is that I keep thinking it would be perfect for a content site) I started to do a search for another potential niche - "rugs" - but after collecting 1200 keywords in my basket, I realized I probably need to narrow this down quite a bit. And yes, I did sneak in a search for a content site idea which is looking pretty good.

Other progress: I also organized all the merchants I've collected so far into separate categories, all of which are potential niches. I've only been to Commission Junction, though, and I think I should probably cruise around at least one other affiliate network (I'm leaning towards ShareaSale).

This week, workwise, could be a light week - I've only got one deadline due now, for this Friday. But the next week is extremely hectic, with five deadlines, so I really should tackle some of them this week to give myself breathing room next week. But I'm going to make my Affiliate Marketers Handbook a priority, so I'll be researching some more merchants and looking up two more niches at Wordtracker.

Hey BJ,
Nifty little blog you've got here :)...I just got done reading your BIG PRINT and noticed, you're not using your affiliate link for cj.com - what gives?

Good question, Teli. Well, I haven't actually used a CJ merchant on an active site yet, so I haven't put the network through its paces. Also, I really don't intend to put too many affiliate links in this blog - I would like to limit my affiliate links to the products that I can honestly give a very high recommendation to. That doesn't mean, of course, that just because I don't have an affiliate link up, it's not a good product!

And it's not that I'm riding the "high ground" or anything like that. I think good marketers in the Internet marketing industry are worth their weight in gold. But I don't want to get enticed into the Internet marketing niche (and given the low commission rates I've been seeing for physical products, I can see why it's so enticing!).

I just want to motivate myself, and hopefully give some helpful information to others who are also starting out, too. I know - it's sad that I have to use a blog to get myself to take action, huh?
