Tip: Printing Ebooks
September 11, 2004
I'm running a little behind schedule today so haven't started on my Martell site planning as I had originally planned. In the meantime, I wanted to post about this great little tool I've found for printing ebooks.
One of the most annoying things I've found about ebooks is that a lot of them are formatted with LOTS of white space. I don't like using up all that paper but what I really dislike is how difficult it is reading paragraphs floating in tons of white space.
With Fineprint, you can print out your ebooks so that each page holds two pages, landscape orientation. For a lot of ebooks, this gives you pages with font sizes that are very comfortable for reading. Make sure you print a test page first, though - I've had a few ebooks which didn't print as well using Fineprint's 2 pages on 1 format. The font was just too small (although the white spaces were just as big).
If you go to Fineprint, there's a download button and that should be the download for the freeware version. I actually downloaded mine from PCWorld, so you can get it from either site. I just noticed that the Fineprint site doesn't mention that what you're downloading is the free unregistered version.
With the unpaid version, you get a line of text advertising the Fineprint site. If you're planning on self-publishing your own books on paper, and want to use a smaller size, the registered version would probably be a good investment.
