Niche-Hunting with Magazines

September 27, 2004

My kids' school just held it's yearly magazine fundraising campaign. The kids came home with a 46 page magazine listing all the magazines that were available. I couldn't get over the choices. After ordering way too many (they needed 15 subscriptions to get the prizes they wanted and I love magazines - a deadly combination, that), when they returned the forms I kept the fundraising magazine for research purposes.

The categories listed were: children, animals/pets, family/parents, teens/young adults, entertainment;music, computer/gaming/science, arts/literature, antiques/collectibles, lifestyles/cultures, home/garden, fashion, fitness/health, crafts/hobbies, food, religion/inspirational, international, business/finance, world issues, country, equestrian, outdoors/camping/fishing/hunting, travel, discovery, history, sports/extreme sports, autos/motorcycles, aviation, boating, books/CDs/DVDs, and of course, since I'm in Canada, French. (We are a bilinqual nation)

Lots of niche inspiration.

I also received this article from DMNews in my inbox today. Rather timely, as I've been thinking about magazines all weekend. Since magazines publish whenever there's a market, the large-scale niches mentioned in the article (lifestyles, crafts, college, medicine and religion) also sound like good places to go niche-hunting.
