Narrow That Niche
September 23, 2004
I just realized I've been making a huge mistake when it comes to pinning down a niche or two to use with the Martell system. A phrase kept haunting me - I posted the other day about my Wordtracker results, and I wrote:
I've done one search for one of my potential niches, and it does look promising. (My problem with this particular niche, though, is that I keep thinking it would be perfect for a content site)
I know what my mistake is now. There's no way a niche should be nagging at me, wanting to be more of a content site. Not the type of niche I'm looking for, anyway. I need something very tightly focused, and an idea that would be suitable for a large content site is just too broad.
So it's back to the drawing board. I have to keep in mind that I'm looking for narrow, and the narrower the better.
For example, I noticed that a lot of the CJ merchants sell rugs. Now, when I ran "rugs" through Wordtracker, I came up with nearly 2000 words, and after adding over a thousand to my basket, I realized this was just nuts. I knew I would have to narrow down, but now I'm getting an inkling just how "narrow" I need to go. Not just "abstract" or "modern" rugs, but a specific style, perhaps - depending on what kind of search results Wordtracker shows me.

Hi BJ,
As someone who has yet to start marketing my first site, I can see I have a lot to learn. I didn't know about Wordtracker before, so I looked up the site - looks like an essential tool.Your blog is really helping me to pick up on things like that.
Thanks.

Gerry,
I would definitely recommend Wordtracker. You said you're mainly building a large content site, and it will help you select keywords to optimize for each of your pages. And I think it will also come in handy for those days when you don't have any ideas about the next page. Some pretty interesting keywords have been coming up in the searches I've done so far - things I would never have thought of on my own.
