I've Been Yahoo-ed ... But No Google Yet
September 05, 2004
Some good news - I checked my new Web site's logs last night, and saw what looked like Yahoo's bot. I went to SelfPromotion.com and double-checked using the handy "Are You Listed?" tool, and sure enough, there it is, popping up in Yahoo's pages.
Of course, I have zero PR on this site. It's a game review site - lots and lots of competition - but like I said, it's more of a hobby site that will allow me to re-use some of old review articles and any new articles I write I'll be selling reprint rights to offline publishers anyway. My strategy plan is to write longer articles and submit them to various Web sites and hopefully build up some PR that way.
Another bit of good news - I did finish that sample SEO report, and emailed it to my contact last night. He emailed me today and says it's exactly what he's looking for. He'll be running it by his team at the office on Tuesday, so hopefully I will have more good news to report later this week.

Hi BJ
Greetings from Ireland. I followed the link to your blog from a post you put in the Self Starters forum. I just wanted to say that I enjoyed the read. I was mostly interested because you mentioned that you had just launched your first site, and I'm about to do that too (although mine is taking months to develop - it's content heavy and all that content has to be written!) But I'm already excited about launching it and marketing it, so I'll try to keep an eye on your blog for tips! I don't think you gave the ERL of your new site though in your blog?
Best of Luck!
Gerry

That's a typo...I do at least know the term URL :)

Thanks for your feedback, Gerry. It sounds like you're off to a very good start with that content-heavy site. My game review site isn't quite the same, I'm afraid. I have basically used it to get my feet wet, make myself take those first steps forward (for me, taking those first steps has been the most difficult part) and start experimenting with different things that I've been reading or hearing about.
I didn't post the URL, because, frankly, it's not really in any great shape. I "launched" it with very little content, even though it will ultimately be a content-rich site. Writing a page a day since it's launched, I have all of about 7 or 8 pages on it! I know I shouldn't really launch a site this way, but after six months of researching and saying to myself, "you know, this is what I want to do", I needed to give myself a push and jumping in feet first was the only way to do it. And it's also nice to have a place to experiment and fool around with, without having to worry too much about making mistakes.
Best wishes with your site, too! Thanks again for your feedback.
