In My In-Box Today
September 16, 2004
I just finished off an assignment that was due today, so of course relaxed by checking my inbox. I use Eudora, and have a filter set to transfer all internet marketing-related mail to it's own mailbox. Needless to say, that mailbox is usually overflowing and often I scan author/subject, read a few newsletters, then select all and delete.
Here's what I found interesting today:
1. Sean Burns shares his method of researching and managing keywords in the latest issue of the WebmastersReference.com newsletter. If you aren't yet subscribed to this newsletter, I highly recommend it. I like it so much, I have a special mailbox set up for it so it doesn't get lost in the Internet marketing newsletter jungle.
I really like the way he has set up his keyword research spreadsheet, and how he determines which keywords to target first, and which ones sink to the bottom of the priority list. And his thoughts on the KEI figure given by Wordtracker make a lot of sense to me.
2. I would never have thought an email newsletter could actually earn money, but Marketing Sherpa (I love their newsletters and they, too, get their own special mailbox and filter) has a fascinating case study about how one UK company has managed to make their paid email newsletter a success. Hurry to read this now, though - the article is available for free access only until September 23.
The case study outlines different tactics the company tried, and which ones worked and which ones didn't. Check out the link to the "polite renewal letter" - I loved the disclaimer that this won't work with US subscribers.
3. I also enjoyed this Marketing Sherpa article about an antique bath company that has successfully utilized search optimization to become tops in its industry (claw-footed bathtub, anyone? Apparently, lots of people ...). There are a lot of good tips in here for product and affiliate marketing alike. I especially liked the company's strategy for inbound links - softsell rather than hard-sell, and each link well-thought out first. This article is also open access until September 23.
