Free Resources: Linking Strategies

September 24, 2004

I recently came across a couple of free resources on linking strategies.

Linking Matters Report is a report that outlines Ken McGaffin's linking strategy. You can download the report in pdf format, and a set of worksheets in Word format. The advice is straight-forward and sensible, and definitely ethical. While linking will affect your search engine performance, I liked what Ken had to say about the overall benefits of pursuing a sound linking strategy:

By implementing a linking strategy you attract more visitors, provide additional content and resources for them, you learn more about your industry online and your competitive position within it, you build trust and you become part of an online community.

While the section on checking your link popularity points to a few free resources, the Google link checks given by these resources will likely be the same as you would get if you went in and checked Google personally - meaning, not very accurate, given Google's recent decision to keep everyone in suspense about PageRank. But back links at other major search engines will probably give you an idea of where you rank with Google in terms of link popularity.

But checking your link popularity isn't the guts of the report. The core of the report is the step-by-step method for pursuing a long-range linking strategy - and to make sure you're following along, there's a handy set of worksheets to fill in to keep on track with everything.

131 (Legitimate) Link Building Strategies is just that (although "just that" really doesn't do this resource justice). It's available in ebook format, but I don't like working with .exe files, so I just went in and cut and paste the online version into a Word document.

At the beginning of the article, the authors note that some of the techniques given can be subject to abuse, so they should be used wisely. Their rule of thumb?

Analyze your intentions, and if you wouldn’t mind an engine knowing what you’re doing, your intentions are okay.

Works for me!

This lengthy article is filled with ideas from experienced Webmasters and online marketers about different linking strategies and link building tips. I haven't gone through it all yet, but it's really been getting the creative juices flowing.

I do have a weakness for finding free resources on the Internet. I've been reading both these resources - but a week and a half ago, I subscribed to Planet Ocean's newsletter and bought the Unfair Advantage to Winning the Search Engine Wars. It's all nicely printed, and sitting in my to-be-read pile, along with copies of the last two editions of the newsletter.

I'll start in on it this weekend, I hope!
