Free Resource: Web Building Tutorials

September 25, 2004

I've been doing more research tonight - yet another forum! (This time, WebmasterWorld. I think it will be time for a "forums" post soon.)

Anyway, one thing lead to another (that seems to be the way my browsing and research works), and I started looking at using datafeeds which then lead me to investigate database programming. As a result, I found this amazing web building tutorial site - W3Schools Online.

The site has full tutorials on just about every possible programming language you have heard of. You can learn basic HTML and CSS, or you can dive into Javascript, or explore XML, ASP, PHP or SQL. I've been looking at a few tutorials, and as a programming newbie, I really like the fact that on the first page of each tutorial, they explain what the particular programming language is, what it can do, and what you will need to do to learn it. (For example, learning PHP requires access to either a server that supports PHP, or else downloading and installing PHP, an Apache server and an SQL database onto your PC).

Until today, I never really knew what XML was (and in my offline work, I actually do a significant amount of XML-related work!). Same goes for PHP and ASP, although I've heard of them, along with MySQL. But they were all just bizarre acronyms that I really wasn't all that interested in.

(But tonight I became interested when it occurred to me that database programming would be helpful in generating dynamic content for sites to a degree that goes beyond simply using a merchant's datafeed.)

I haven't gone too far into any particular tutorial yet, but based on what I've been reading so far, the language is very user-friendly and quite non-technical. The site also believes in learning from examples, and most of the tutorials have examples that you can access and study.

Makes me wish I had a decent laptop and a wireless router so I can read in bed ...
