Barry Stein's Marketing Blog

September 04, 2004

My introduction to the marketing blog world was through Barry Stein's excellent marketing blog. I first found his blog this past winter, just after he finished posting his final entry, and I was fascinated because Barry offered such helpful information. If you are at all interested in using Adwords, Barry's blog is a must-read.

Basically, Barry details his experiments with different Adwords campaigns that he's been running:

The main reason for the marketing blog is so that I can keep a journal on what I'm doing with my online business. I hope this information will be of interest to anyone who wants to make money online since they will be able to learn what is working and not working for my Internet business and apply this information to their own online business.

What I enjoyed most about Barry's blog is that he's not really trying to sell you anything (but if you are interested in either Chris Carpenter's Google Cash book or Perry Marshal's Definitive Guide to Adwords, then you should read Barry's blog and if you found him at all helpful, consider purchasing through one of his links.). And sprinkled throughout his blog are some real gems about making a living online. Here's an example:

The best advice I could give someone planning to start a business, whether online or offline, is to concentrate on just two things. You need both these things or you will probably fail to be happy and make a good living.

1. Find out what you are really passionate about.

2. Help as many people as you can.

I think that Barry really does practice what he preaches. When I emailed him after I first read his blog to say thank you, he gave me some really honest advice about a couple of info products I was debating purchasing (and at that point he could have sold me on all of them).

The other useful thing about the blog is that Barry goes into detail about his failed campaigns. You will see, in depth, the things that didn't work. And when he does hit on a campaign that does work, he gives you as much detail as he possibly can (unlike creating a content site for affiliate marketing, you can't really give away your secrets to a successful online campaign because in a PPC situation, yes, someone CAN copy you exactly and get away with it.)

Unfortunately for me, I'm not really interested in PPC. I love writing content, finding niches and developing websites, and since I don't have a need to make money tomorrow (which is one of the attractions of PPC), I can spend my time working on more long-range goals. Even so, I keep going back to Barry's blog and re-reading it for the incredible inspiration he gives.
