Progress Report: Affiliate Marketers Handbook

September 14, 2004

I spent my weekend looking over the first few steps in James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Handbook. James has the book set up into "steps" rather than chapters, and even better, breaks his steps up into baby steps. When I first read this book earlier this year, I felt really inspired. The Handbook tells you exactly how James Martell does what he does. You come away from it feeling, "I think I can actually do this."

(That link is an affiliate link, by the way - more on affiliate links at the end of my post).

Despite feeling inspired, it's taken me a few months to get to the point where I'm actually ready to take action, but now that I'm here and ready, I'm glad I've got the Handbook here with me. Rereading the first few steps, I felt inspired again. But even better - I actually DID the first few steps that James outlines in his book.

The only deviation from the steps that I plan on making is using Dreamweaver instead of Frontpage (James recommends using Frontpage). I'm more comfortable with Dreamweaver. I don't think it makes a big difference, though, what html editor/web page creation software I use, as long as I actually get my site up.

I can't tell you exactly what is in each step of the Handbook, of course, but if you do have a copy, you can follow along and see exactly what I'm doing and why - in my progress update I'll let you know what steps I've completed or about to complete. My main goal is to have a Martell site up and running within the next month or so. I can't commit to an exact time frame because my regular deadlines fluctuate so much, but that's the kind of time frame I'm targeting.

My secondary goal is to provide a sort of continuing case study, so that you can decide for yourself whether this method works, and more specifically, whether it will work for you. Having read through the book once already, I know this method will work for me, but only as long as I take action. As to how much income can be generated, I think it depends on how well I select my niche and my affiliate programs.

So I've completed step 1 and started re-reading step 2. I already have three ideas in mind, and will be going to Wordtracker tomorrow to see which one I should play around with first. I think the hardest thing will be to pick one and not work on all three at once! For one of my ideas, I have the ideal affiliate program but only a hazy notion of the keywords/niche to target. My other two ideas are based on a niche and I still have to find affiliate programs for them.

I'm hoping it will only take me about a month to get one site up and running, because then I can start on the second idea, and then the third. But first of all, I hope that all three ideas still look good after I run them through Wordtracker.

And finally, regarding the affiliate links in this blog: Now that I've decided I will be posting a lot about working with the Martell method (and also Ken Evoy's SBI system), I realized that it would look pretty strange after a while if I'm posting a lot about doing my Martell site and in every post I'm pointing out that the link is an affiliate link! So I've revised my Big Print post. It's actually no longer a post. I've given it a page to itself.

So that's it for today. I'm looking forward to getting familiar with Wordtracker tomorrow.
